In 2016, the Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) at the Port of Brownsville, Texas, ranked second out of 195 FTZs in the United States for the value of exports, according to the U.S. FTZ Board’s annual report.
Last year, the port’s FTZ exported $2.8 billion in goods. It has also ranked in the top five since 2012, and this is the second time it has ranked number two.
The FTZ is administered by the Port of Brownsville and, since 2013, has operated sites throughout Cameron County. Magnet sites include Port of Harlingen, Brownsville-South Padre Island Air Cargo Complex, NAFTA Industrial Park in Brownsville, FINSA Industrial Park at Los Indios, and Valley International Airport Industrial Park.
“The Port of Brownsville has made great strides in creating a sustainable economic engine,” John Wood, Brownsville Navigation District chairman, said. “This ranking further demonstrates the value of the zone and the port’s overall role in transforming the Rio Grande Valley as a stable, reliable logistics platform for international trade.”
The FTZ in Dorchester County, South Carolina, ranked first and Miami-Dade County, Florida, ranked third.
The Port of Brownsville FTZ ranked 25th for the value of imports. In 2016, imports were valued at more than $2.5 billion.
Texas ranks No. 1 for FTZ activity.
