The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Safe Cars Save Lives Check for Recalls campaign is again urging motorists to check for open vehicles recalls.
The program urges motorists to do this twice annually during the time changes in March and November.
To discover if a vehicle is under recall, visit NHTSA.gov and search for the Vehicle Identification Number. The website also contains safety and informative videos on recalls.
While on the website, drivers can also register for automated recall notifications.
Last week it became easier for Maryland residents to learn about recalls. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao and the NHTSA awarded a $222,300 grant to the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration.
Maryland is participating in a two-year pilot program testing the feasibility of providing open recall information to consumers at the time of vehicle registration. At the end of the testing program, the state will analyze the results.
“Recalls are serious,” Chao said. “Recall repairs are completely free to the consumer. This first-in-the-nation grant will serve as an example to the rest of the country as we continue to work across government to reach consumers in new and creative ways with potentially life-saving information about their vehicles.”
