The Alliance to Save Energy recently chartered the 50 by 50 Commission with the aim of reducing energy use in the U.S. transportation sector by half by 2050.
In the United States, transportation is one-third of the energy consumed. The commission will work with six committees to develop investments and regulations to help achieve the energy reduction goal.
The committees are Enabling Infrastructure; Heavy-Duty and Freight Vehicles; Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Shared Mobility and Automation; Light-Duty Vehicles; Non-Road Vehicles; and Outreach and Implementation.
New technology offers ways to reduce emissions and increase energy efficiency as well as encourage economic growth and saving customers money.
“Transportation in the United States is changing rapidly and it presents an enormous opportunity to improve mobility and drive economic prosperity while at the same time-saving energy and reducing pollution,” Kateri Callahan, president of the Alliance to Save Energy, said. “We’re bringing together experts from across this sector because we need a comprehensive approach to maximize the energy efficiency gains.”
The commission will include government and private sector leaders and is co-chaired by National Grid U.S. President Dean Seavers and Audi of America President Scott Keogh. Commissioners include mayors, utilities, advocacy groups, automakers, public transit, and government agencies.
