Employees at auto-glass manufacturer Fuyao Glass America filed a request Monday with the National Labor Relations Board, citing unfair and unequal treatment on the job as well as unsafe, arbitrary policies and workplace conditions.
They are asking the board to schedule a union representation vote. The plant’s approximately 1,500 workers would then vote on joining the United Auto Workers (UAW).
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined Fuyao in the past after receiving numerous complaints.
Employees, meanwhile, have been trying for the past two years to form a union. The UAW has not said how many employee signatures were sent to the labor board.
“Fuyao employees have expressed over and over that they chose Fuyao because they wanted job security,” Rich Rankin, UAW Region 2B director, said. “Community leaders have told us that their hopes are for Fuyao to bring stability to the Dayton (Ohio) community. We all want the company to be successful and want that measure to include quality, stable jobs so that everyone wins.”
The labor board will review the UAW union cards it received and has scheduled a hearing for Oct. 25. If Fuyao and the union come to an agreement on a time and place for the vote, however, the hearing will be canceled.
