Legislation that hopes to make mandatory screening and treatment for sleep disorders among transportation workers has received the support of the American Thoracic Society (ATS).
The legislative effort is the work of Sens. Charles Schumer (D-NY), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ).
“As experts in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of sleep-related disorders, we know that sleep disorders like sleep apnea can lead to impaired decision-making, delayed reaction times and increased workplace accidents and fatalities,” ATS Past-President David Gozal said. “Because of the trust Americans put in the men and women who run our transportation system, it is important that we appropriately identify and treat transportation workers for sleep-disordered breathing.”
Earlier this year, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and Federal Railroad Administration both ended a push for rules demanding such sleep apnea tests for truck drivers and train operators. They instead have turned to the policy that such issues could be addressed through existing safety programs and rules.
“We cannot and should not underestimate the value of sleep,” Sanjay R. Patel, an ATS member, said. “That screening for sleep-disordered breathing among transportation workers was ever contested, is regrettable.”
