Global Automakers President and CEO John Bozzella recently urged members of the U.S. House of Representatives to pass the Self Drive Act.
Bozzella sent a letter to House Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Chairman Bob Latta (R-OH), House Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone (D-NJ), House Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Ranking Member Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), and House Energy and Commerce Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR).
“As automated vehicle systems present the significant potential to save lives, enhance mobility, improve transportation efficiency, and reduce fuel consumption, it is important that public policy encourage testing and enable nationwide deployment of vehicles across all levels of automation,” Bozzella said. “Global Automakers believes the Self Drive Act is a critical step toward ensuring that the United States continues to be a leader in accelerating the development and deployment of these technologies. In particular, we believe the bill’s clarification of the respective roles of federal and local governments is essential to both protect the public and drive innovation.”
Global Automakers looks forward to working with Congress to see the bill becomes law, Bozzella said.
The act would establish the framework for the advancement of safety systems as technology is currently evolving faster than regulations, he said.
