The Brownsville, Texas, Navigation District (BND) Board of Commissioners recently signed a memorandum with the Mission Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to develop a variety of projects, including international trade opportunities with Mexico.

BND and Mission EDC will work with the Port of Brownsville and the Mission Business Park to increase business.

Mission EDC’s goal is to create jobs and capital investment to Mission, Texas.

“Mission, the Port of Brownsville and the RGV make up one of the most dynamic international trade corridors in Texas and the country,” Mission EDC CEO Alex Meade said. “Forming strategic partnerships to create business opportunities and jobs has always been a priority for the Mission EDC. We’re pleased to work with the Port of Brownsville on trade and economic development.”

The Port of Brownsville is one of the largest economic generators in the Rio Grande Valley, BND Chairman John Wood said. The agreement will further economic development in the area and provide positive changes, he said.

The Port of Brownsville generates more than $2 billion regionally and $3 billion to Texas.

Mission EDC focuses its efforts on five areas: business expansion and retention, entrepreneurship and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) education, infrastructure and transportation, recruitment, and quality of life.
