The Port of Los Angeles and GE Transportation recently signed a commercial agreement worth approximately $12 million, extending for five additional years an existing partnership that uses a digital solution to keep cargo moving efficiently through the port.
The agreement would make the technology available to all container terminals and shipping lines.
Implementing the technology would allow the port to support thousands of cargo importers, more than 15,000 truck providers and approximately nine million 20-foot shipping containers.
The port would become between 8 percent and 12 percent more efficient if the technology were used throughout the entire port, the pilot program results found.
Users of the technology said it was easy to navigate, the pilot program found.
“With our container volumes at record highs, the GE digital shipping solution is critical to our future success,” Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, said. “The GE portal is an investment in the long-term growth of the Port of Los Angeles and tells our stakeholders and customers that we take seriously our responsibility to find new ways to drive efficiencies and optimization. We believe this project will not only move the needle but could be a game changer.”
The agreement must be reviewed by Los Angeles City Council.
