Mark Buzby

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao recently sworn in Rear Adm. Mark Buzby, USN, as the new administrator of the United States Maritime Administration.

In his new role, Buzby will be tasked with promoting the use of waterborne transportation and its integration with other facets of the nation’s transportations systems. He will also lead in the development, maintenance, and oversight of U.S. Merchant Marine and its academy.

With more than 34 years of experience with the U.S. Navy, Buzby spent a large portion of his career focusing on maritime transportation, serving on the staffs of the Sixth Fleet, the U.S. Fleet Forces Command, the Navy Staff, and the Joint Staff, retiring in 2013. He has also served as the Commander of the Military Sealift Command (MSC) from 2009 to 2013.

“I grew up on the water, piloting vessels from the time I was nine years old, and have a lifelong love for the sea,” Buzby said. “It is one of the great honors of my life to serve as Maritime Administrator, and to start working to grow and revitalize the U.S. Merchant Marine, and ensure our nation continues its maritime leadership.”

Busby graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1979 and earned a bachelor of science degree in nautical science and U.S. Coast Guard Third Mate License. He also graduated from the Joint Forces Staff College and holds master’s degrees from Salve Regina University and the U.S. Naval War College.
