U.S. Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Jack Reed (D-RI) recently introduced a transportation bill that is being considered by the Senate Appropriations Committee this week.
The bill provides $60 billion in funding, including $19.47 billion for the U.S. Department of Transportation. It would not privatize the air traffic control system but it would increase both the local passenger facility charge program and the Airport Improvement Program.
The bill was applauded by the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE).
“Chairman Collins and ranking member Reed are providing real leadership and meaningful action to give airports the tools they need to upgrade aging airport facilities, enhance competition, invest in the future, and create quality American jobs,” AAAE President and CEO Todd Hauptli said. “Their understanding of the depth of the challenge was apparent when I appeared before their subcommittee in March, and they deserve immense credit for their shared resolve to put politics and excuses for inaction aside in the legislation they have released this week.”
The airport industry owes Collins and Reed a debt of gratitude, Hauptli said.
The bill also includes $2.13 billion to help cities and states built and expand transit lines. The majority of the funds would be given to existing projects.
