Delaware’s Department of Transportation (DelDOT) recently held a ground-breaking ceremony for its Newark Regional Transportation Center.
The project, funded by a $10 million TIGER IV Grant from the Federal Transit Administration, includes the station, a parking lot, a pedestrian overpass, track modifications and a platform.
The platform will be Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant, and the station will include passenger amenities.
The first phase of the project will be the construction of an access road and the expansion of the parking lot.
The ceremony was attended by Gov. John Carney (D-DE), U.S. Senator Thomas Carper (D-DE), U.S. Senator Christopher Coons (D-DE), U.S. Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), Secretary of Transportation Jennifer Cohan and Transportation Chief Engineer Robert McCleary.
“When it’s finished, this federal investment will make our local transportation system more efficient, while also making it safer for drivers and passengers alike,” Carper said. “The NRTC will breathe new life into this once bustling corridor, and this tremendous step forward would’ve been impossible without the commitment from all levels of government and our private partners to work together and deliver results to the people of the First State.”
