The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) recently announced the winners of the America’s Transportation Awards.
The competition recognizes departments of transportation projects that improve communities.
Awards are given in three categories – operations excellence, technology and innovation, and community development. Departments compete against others of the same size.
“Every project nominated in this competition represents the hard work and dedication of state DOTs across the country to meet the transportation needs of the communities we serve,” AASHTO President David Bernhardt said.
Eight projects from six Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states won awards out of 19 nominations from nine states.
The winners include:
Connecticut DOT in the large segment of the Quality of Life/Community Development category for its I-95/I-91/Route 34 Interchange Reconstruction Project.
Massachusetts DOT in the medium segment of the Best Use of Technology and Innovation category for its All Electronic Tolling Project.
Maryland DOT in the small segment of the Operations Excellence category for its Metro Interlockings Reconstruction Project.
Winners of the Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award will be announced at AASHTO’s annual meeting in September and will receive $10,000 to donate to a scholarship or charity.
The competition is sponsored by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This is the competition’s 10th year.
