The TSA Pre✓ program has surpassed 5 million enrolled passengers, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said.

The program allows low-risk travelers to experience a faster screening program. These low-risk passengers do not need to remove certain items from their carry-ons or remove jackets, shoes or belts during screenings.

The program is available at more than 180 airports nationwide and costs $17 for one year or $85 for five years. It is open to all U.S. citizens who are permanent residents and military personnel, but TSA approval is required.

“By growing the trusted traveler population, we help our officers focus on potential threats, which strengthens the security screening process and ultimately provides better security for all travelers,” TSA Acting Administrator Huban A. Gowadia said. “We will continue our efforts to further expand the TSA Pre✓ program, with the ultimate goal of providing the most effective security in the most efficient way.”

There are nearly 400 application centers nationwide, located in 44 airports. The first opened in December 2013.

In addition to TSA Pre✓, there are three other traveler programs: Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI. While they are offered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, participants in these programs do not need to apply for TSA Pre✓.
