A new public, fast-charging station for electric vehicles has recently been installed for motorists traveling north of St. Cloud, Minnesota on Interstate 94 (I-94).
Part of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, the station is the first of many electric vehicle charging stations that will provide service to motorists throughout the northern portion of the I-94 corridor.
Stretching from I-94 in Port Huron, Michigan to Minnesota/North Dakota border, the area was selected by the Federal Highway Administration in 2016 as one of 55 designated routes that aim to promote the use of alternative fuel vehicles.
“MnDOT is excited to be a partner to promote and educate the public about zero emissions and the electric vehicle charging infrastructure,” MnDOT Commissioner Charlie Zelle said. “We believe that alternate fuels and electric vehicles will be an important part of the future of transportation and can support progress towards the state’s GHG reduction targets”
The new charging station network is slated to span 35 U.S. states and cover approximately 85,000 miles of road.
The installation follows a recent designation by MnDOT and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency naming I-94 as a “zero emissions corridor” as a way to promote electric vehicle charging infrastructure throughout the area. The designation has since been coordinated with state departments of transportation in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and the city of Detroit.
