The trucking industry saw revenue grow $30.4 billion from the previous year in 2025, reaching $936.4 billion, according to the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) annual industry data compendium.
In 2025, trucks moved 11.46 billion tons of freight, a 190 million ton increase.
Trucks moved 86 percent of goods across the Mexican border and were responsible for 68 percent of surface trade between the United States and Canada.
Small businesses dominate the industry. The majority of carriers, 99.2 percent, operate fewer than 100 power units with 91.1 percent operating 10 or fewer trucks.
There were 8.5 million people employed in industry-related jobs with 3.45 million being professional drivers.
“Reliable data is one of the most powerful tools we have to tell trucking’s story and demonstrate our industry’s indispensable role in the economy,” Henry Hanscom ATA chief advocacy and public affairs officer, said. “Trends forms a cornerstone of ATA’s successful advocacy efforts by enabling our federation to more effectively push for policies that strengthen trucking, support drivers and the supply chain, and keep our economy moving.”
The 2026 edition of American Trucking Trends also includes data such as household goods movements and the broader macroeconomy.
The ATA represents for-hire motor carriers, private carriers, shippers, industry suppliers and allied companies, and individual professionals.
