Pennsylvania-based Reading & Northern Railroad recently completed the installation of 10 additional miles of a signal system along its Main Line between Reading and Pittston, Pa.

Railroad lines that lack signal protection require some type of authority to operate over the track such as written permission or verbal permission from a dispatcher. The signal system will provide permission and will detect if there are track issues and provide the crew with a more restrictive signal.

The company plans to install the system along the entirety of its 114-mile Main Line and will phase the signals into service. The project represents a significant investment in the railroad’s infrastructure and will enhance railroad safety and operating efficiency.

The project also builds on extensive work to restore signal infrastructure along the southern portion of the Main Line where approximately 60 miles of signals had been removed decades ago and the system needed rebuilt.

Reading & Northern plans to announce additional project details in the near future.

Reading & Northern Railroad is a privately held railroad company serving more than 80 customers in nine eastern Pennsylvania counties. It owns nearly 2,000 freight cars, operates freight and steam- and diesel-powered passenger excursions over 400 miles of track, and employs more than 400 people.
