IATA names Goh new chairman

Goh Choon Phong

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently named Goh Choon Phong chairman of the IATA board of governors, replacing Willie Walsh.

Goh, CEO of Singapore Airlines, began his term following the 73rd annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit earlier this month. He will serve a one-year term.

“It is an honor to serve as IATA’s chairman for the coming year,” Goh said. “While the industry’s global profitability may be strengthening, there is more work to be done as it is not evenly spread out. Security is top of the agenda. We must improve our partnerships with governments to meet the many emerging threats. Additionally, I will be paying special attention to progressing preparations for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, driving the modernization of cargo processes, and increasing transaction volumes with the New Distribution Capability.”

Walsh will continue to serve on the board as well as the Chair Committee.

IATA Director General and CEO Alexandre de Juniac thanked Walsh and said he was looking forward to working with Goh.

The IATA also named Goh’s successor, Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, and announced that his one-year term as chairman will begin next June.

Goh is the third Singapore Airlines CEO to serve as IATA chairman.
