The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Federal Highway Administration and other officials broke ground on the I-270 Corridor Improvements project on Monday.
The project, which will be conducted in three phases, will reconstruct I-270 between Adams County and North Denver to improve safety, travel time reliability, freight operations and multimodal connectivity. Work includes building two general-purpose lanes and one express lane in each direction, rebuilding the Vasquez Boulevard Interchange, replacing 12 bridges, adding a pedestrian overpass bridge, and improving on- and off-ramp movements at I-76.
“I-270 is a road that serves many roles at once. It carries commuters to and through Adams County, it carries significant freight, and it is badly in need of investment so that it can do its job safely,” Shoshana Lew, CDOT executive director, said. “With more than 100,000 vehicles depending on it daily, I-270 is a short highway with an outsized role, linking I-25, I-70 and I-76, moving workers to jobs, freight to market and families across the north-metro area.”
Phase one begins this month and runs through early 2030. Phase two will run from early 2030 through 2033, and phase three will run from early 2030 through 2033. Until Spring ,motorists can expect overnight, single-lane closures.
