The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) a $25 million grant to support a project that will remove center crosswalks at station platforms and perform leveling at eight South Dallas stations along the agency’s Red and Blue Lines. The grant also will fund upgrades to way-finding signage and security systems.
The project will provide level boarding and greater access, especially for those with limited mobility or traveling with luggage.
“This grant funding continues our commitment to modernizing our entire system,” Trenise Winters, DART chief operating officer, said. “Upgrading these eight South Dallas stations means closing transit equity gaps, and providing a smoother, safer journey for thousands of our passengers every day.”
Dallas Area Rapid Transit provides light rail, Trinity Railway Express, regional rail, bus routes, GoLink on-demand service, and paratransit across a 12-city region. It carries more than 171,000 passengers daily.
Work will begin early next year and will be conducted in phases through 2030.
Federal funding significantly decreases the amount of local funding needed to cover any remaining project costs and is part of DART’s focus on fiscal stewardship.
The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded more than $1.73 billion to 127 public transportation projects nationwide.
