Software improves safety of loading atypical cargo

American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), a classification and technical services provider for marine and offshore industries, has introduced software that streamlines loading analysis, allowing bulk carriers to load atypical cargo.

The software allows faster decisions when loading steel coiling, improving safety and efficiency.

“ABS understands that maintaining a leadership role means finding ways to improve safety and efficiency for industry,” ABS Executive Vice President for Global Marine Kirsi Tikka said. “Our new steel coil loading solution delivers customization options to expand the range of loads that can be carried safely by bulk carriers.”

ABS recognized the need for the bulker industry to expand its service in challenging markets, Tikka said.

Earlier this year, ABS introduced a mobile app for tugboat and workboat owners allowing them to document compliance with the U.S. Coast Guard’s new inspection regime Subchapter M.

The app is aimed at companies that have little or no technical support on their vessels. The cloud-based operation runs on a tablet and allows the user to document compliance while performing day-to-day operations. It does not require onboard data storage.

The app is in competition with Helm CONNECT Compliance software, designed by Class NK’s Helm Operations software division. It is hosted by Amazon Web Services.
