The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Interstate 95 (I-95) interchange at U.S. 1 in Volusia County.

The project will widen both I-95 off-ramps, extend the northbound off-ramp and southbound on-ramps for safer access to and from I-95, widen a one-mile segment of U.S. 1 to six lanes, redesign loop ramps on I-95 and add three new bridges.

“These new enhancements will bring much needed congestion relief and safety improvements as U.S. 1 traffic volumes are expected to double in the next 20 years,” FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue, said. “By reconstructing the I-95 interchange and increasing U.S. 1 capacity by 50 percent, this project is expected to have a $554 million regional economic impact in the Volusia County community.”

The project is part of Moving Florida Forward, a $4 billion investment in projects that address congestion, improve safety, and ensure the resiliency of the transportation network. The I-95 project was advanced 15 to 20 years ahead of schedule and fully funded.

FDOT previously announced an accelerated construction start date of 2027, but the project was moved forward by an additional year. The department moved the project forward because it will be using the Modified Phased Design-Build approach.
