The Maritime Administration recently awarded seven Alaska projects more than $115.4 million in Port Infrastructure Development Program grants. The program awards grants based on safety, efficiency, port resilience, and work force development criteria.
“These projects address real, on-the-ground needs at ports across Alaska — improving freight movement, reliability, and day-to-day operations,” Ryan Anderson, Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities commissioner, said. “By strengthening these connections, we’re helping facilitate economic growth and expanding opportunities for communities across the state.”
The awardees are:
Skagway was awarded $38.6 million to build an industrial dock with a RORO freight ramp and integrated fuel header.
The state of Alaska was awarded $34 million to expand Port Mackenzie with a 110-acre cargo laydown area, rail spur, and barge dock improvements.
The Alaska Railroad Corporation was awarded $20.4 million to upgrade a railroad tunnel that connects the Port of Whittier to the railroad’s mainline track.
Homer was awarded $11.2 million to replace its commercial fishing port’s aging float system.
Anchorage was awarded $4.7 million to plan for the replacement of a petroleum terminal damaged recently by earthquakes.
Whittier was awarded $4.1 million to design a replacement for the Delong Dock.
Chevak was awarded $2.35 million to plan a new barge landing facility.
