The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will invest $657 million in ferry services and infrastructure through three grant programs.
The Passenger Ferry Grant Program provides funding to assist in the financing of capital projects that support passenger ferry systems in urbanized areas. This includes ferry vessels, terminals, and related infrastructure.
The Electric or Low-Emitting Ferry Pilot Program provides funding for projects that support the purchase of electric or low-emitting ferries or for the electrification of, or other reduction of emissions, from existing ferries.
The Ferry Service for Rural Communities Program provides states with funding to ensure basic essential ferry service in rural areas.
“This investment will expand routes and fund new ferries to give American workers and families more transportation options in both rural and urban cities,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.
The U.S. Department of Transportation will take into consideration projects that will make real-time information in passenger waiting areas easier to read by using large print and simplified language.
It will take into consideration how a project will improve the accessibility of transportation for families with young children and increases accessibility for people with disabilities.
It also will take into consideration how projects make ferry travel more family-friendly and improve access to jobs, doctor’s offices, and leisure activities.
The application deadline is May 11.
