The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently awarded the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities a $108.7 million Bridge Investment Program grant for the
Johnson River and Gerstle River Bundled Bridge Replacement Project.
“One bridge at a time, we are helping to ensure that Americans have safe and reliable infrastructure,” FHWA Administrator Sean McMaster said.
The program funds projects that improve the condition of bridges by rebuilding those in poor condition and to upgrade design standards for outdated ones. Under the program, the Johnson River and Gerstle River Bundled Bridge Replacement Project qualifies for a Large Bridge Project grant because total eligible costs are more than $100 million.
The project will replace the Johnson River and Gerstle River Bridges in Southeast Fairbanks Census Area. Issues with the bridges can lead to three-hour, 150-mile detours along the Alaska Highway.
“This critical investment strengthens our transportation infrastructure, enhances safety for Alaskans, and supports economic growth across the interior part of our state,” Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy said. “We appreciate the administration’s recognition of Alaska’s unique needs and its commitment to ensuring our communities remain connected.”
Work is expected to begin on the Johnson River Bridge in 2027 and the Gerstle River Bridge in 2029.
