The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) recently opened the procurement process for the Sagamore Bridge replacement project.
The department seeks proposals from qualified design and construction firms.
The project, part of the Cape Cod Bridges Program, will include a new bridge, reconstruction of local roadway connections, roadway realignments of Route 6 and Route 3, new bicycle and pedestrian pathways, and stormwater improvements.
“Delivering essential transportation projects in a timely manner, on time and on budget is one way we can best serve the communities and residents that rely on a sound transportation system,” Phil Eng, interim transportation secretary, said. ”Engaging with industry and potential bidders demonstrates our commitment towards replacing the Sagamore Bridge.”
The deadline for submitting letters of interest is May 27 at noon. The department will select a design-build team by late 2027. Construction of the new Sagamore Bridge is scheduled to begin in the winter of 2027-2028. The project is currently undergoing environmental review.
The 90 year-old Sagamore and Bourne Bridges are the only roadway connections between Cape Cod and the Massachusetts mainland. The Cape Cod Bridges Project will provide new crossings over the Cape Cod Canal. It is led by MassDOT in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Federal Highway Administration.
