The U.S. Department of Transportation has opened the application period for the Safe Streets for All grant program, offering a total of $999.5 million during this funding round.

The SS4A program invests in safety strategies that reduce serious injuries and fatalities such as modern rail crossings, faster emergency response, safer neighborhood streets for families, and more parking for truckers. The program’s goal is to upgrade crucial safety infrastructure, help improve roadway safety and save more lives.

The program awards two types of grants. Implementation grants fund projects or strategies aligned with an existing safety action plan that address roadway safety challenges. Planning and demonstration grants support the development, completion or enhancement of an action plan.

“We are empowering our state and local partners to modernize vital infrastructure and reduce roadway fatalities,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said. “This grant program will cover everything from ensuring paramedics can reach you faster in an emergency to making sure kids are safer when walking to school.”

Applicants are encouraged to submit eligible projects as soon as possible. The application deadline is May 26.

The department will select the awardees along with experts from the Federal Highway Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Federal Transit Administration.
