Hawaii-based Matson, an ocean transportation and logistics services provider, Texas-based BNSF Railway, one of the largest railroad networks in North America, and Texas-based War-Lok, a trucking and intermodal security locks manufacturer, have partnered to launch an enhanced cargo security program that will add two layers of protection to the majority of international intermodal cargo Matson, a container shipping and logistics company.

“Matson has a long history of industry leadership and pioneering customer focused innovation, and this is the latest example,” John Lauer, Matson executive vice president and chief commercial officer, said. “We’re raising the bar with what we believe to be the most comprehensive carrier–led intermodal security program in the market—setting a new standard for cargo protection.

Under the program, Matson will deploy War–Lok security devices on international containers moving from Los Angeles to any BNSF network destinations beginning in the second quarter. The devices will be free.

An agreement with BNSF Railway will position Matson containers in the lower well of international intermodal rail cars traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago and in rail cars moving through the Chicago gateway to select Eastern U.S. destinations up to the BNSF interchange point.

“While no security system can eliminate all risk, these added measures significantly reduce exposure to theft and reinforce Matson’s commitment to protecting customer cargo throughout the inland journey,” Lauer said.
