The North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) and Austria-based Kapsch TrafficCom, a transportation solutions company for sustainable mobility, recently launched the world’s first production-level cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) tolling system on a live roadway.

“This project proves that connected vehicle technology is no longer a future aspiration; it is a present reality on North Carolina roadways,” JJ Eden, North Carolina Turnpike Authority executive director, said. “By integrating V2X data directly into our operational back-office systems, we are demonstrating that this technology is seamless, scalable, and ready to support the next generation of travelers.”

The deployment integrates vehicle-to-everything data into a live tolling system with live road traffic, making it different from single use safety test cases or pilot projects confined to test tracks.

The system was installed on NC-540 and communicates with fleet vehicles using roadside units processing tolling transactions from onboard units installed in maintenance vehicles. Data from the roadside units is sent to Kapsch’s roadside system and NCTA’s operational back office, eliminating the need for additional processing or manual intervention. The system also prevents mistaken charges or duplicate records.

“By integrating these advanced data streams into our existing roadside and operational back office systems, we are delivering the production-grade platform that agencies need to confidently step into the next era of mobility, ” JB Kendrick, Kapsch TrafficCom North America president, said.
