Reading & Northern Railroad (R&N), the largest privately owned railroad in Pennsylvania, recently announced 2025 was a record year for freight revenues and passenger ridership.
R&N achieved modest growth in freight carloads that led R&N having its highest revenue level in its history. Anthracite coal shipments exceeded 1 million tons for the third straight year. R&N, in partnership with its terminal operator Texas Sands, increased its frac sand carloadings to 2,000 carloads. The railroad also had a successful year shipping food and ag commodities, various forest products, metals, and plastic resins.
The number of passengers surpassed 400,000 riders for the first time in 2025.

In 2025, the company also spent more than $8 million purchasing 117 freight cars, numerous vehicles and track equipment, and track and signal materials.
The railroad projects it will move 40,000 carloads of freight and more than 410,000 passengers in 2026.
