The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) recently began construction on a $35.2 million redevelopment of the Waterbury Train Station.

Construction is part of a project that will modernize the six stations on the Metro-North Waterbury Branch Line and will improve accessibility, enhance the rider experience, and reconnect the community to the historic Union Station building.

Changes will include a 1,600-square-foot indoor waiting area in the Union Station building, a 350-foot platform that will support four-car boarding in compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act standards, real-time arrival video displays, improved lighting, and security features.

“This project reopens Union Station to the public for the first time in decades, restoring access to a historic building while bringing the station into full ADA compliance,” Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said. “With modern amenities, we’re delivering the kind of 21st-century transit experience riders deserve.”

CTDOT and Metro-North will maintain offices on a mezzanine level, and a new elevator will connect the facility’s three floors.

Construction of the indoor waiting area will begin in November. Platform work will begin early next year. CTDOT will provide substitute bus service to minimize disruptions beginning in summer 2026.

The waiting area is expected to open to the public in fall 2026.
