The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) recently opened the application period for the Special Road Fund (SRF) program.

The program helps finance highway projects that political subdivisions, tribal governments and state agencies identified that typically have some funding but need additional assistance. Eligible projects are road projects that provide access to and within recreational, tourist, and historical areas. They also must be projects planned for construction in 2026 or 2027.

“The Special Roads Fund is a great opportunity to help improve access roads to and within tourist, historical, and public recreational areas,” NDDOT Director Ron Henke said. “We encourage counties, cities, state agencies, and tribal governments to apply, and to share this program with other agencies within their jurisdictions such as park boards, historical societies, and townships.”

NDDOT will contribute 80 percent of a project’s costs with a cap of $500,000. Applicants must fund the remaining 20 percent of a project’s costs. In previous years, the agency contributed 60 percent, with a maximum of $300,000, with the applicant funding 40 percent.

Applications are due on Nov. 30. The Special Road Fund Advisory Committee is expected to meet early next year to review the applications and select the grant recipients.
