Foothill Transit, an agency serving the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys of Los Angeles County, recently awarded Clean Energy Fuels Corp., the largest provider of clean fuel for the transportation market in the United States, a contract to design, build and maintain the agency’s second hydrogen fueling station.

The $11.3 million station will be located at Foothill Transit’s Arcadia bus yard and will serve 19 hydrogen fuel cell buses that will operate out of the site. It also will serve as a fueling depot for the agency’s renewable natural gas (RNG) bus fleet.

Foothill Transit has a 357-bus fleet that serves more than 11 million customers annually. The fleet’s 33 zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell buses operate out of the agency’s Pomona station, its first hydrogen station that also was constructed by Clean Energy. The Pomona station was built in 2021 and began operating in 2023. Clean Energy oversees its operations and maintenance.

“We’ve had a longstanding relationship as trusted partners of Foothill Transit for over two decades,” Chad Lindholm, Clean Energy senior vice president, said. “We’re proud to support their transition to clean fuels – whether it’s RNG or hydrogen.”

The Arcadia station will store liquid hydrogen and dispense it as a gas.
