McDowell Express, a microtransit program that launched in McDowell County, N.C. in May, has provided more than 1,900 rides and is seeking steady month-over-month growth.

“McDowell County Transit is extremely proud of the success of McDowell Express. Ridership has far exceeded our expectations,” Jason Hollifield, McDowell transit director, said. “We are happy to provide a new, much-needed transportation option to our citizens. We are appreciative of the support of our local government, NCDOT (North Carolina Department of Transportation) and the MEE NC federal grant that made it all possible.”

MEE NC supports microtransit services in 11, mostly rural, communities by funding software and operations and providing capital support.

The service operates on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It serves residents and visitors within a seven-mile radius of downtown Marion and costs $2.50 per person for one way.

On-demand microtransit operates based on rider request rather than a fixed schedule. Riders schedule rides using an app.

“McDowell’s Microtransit success is part of the N.C. Department of Transportation’s ongoing efforts to work with local communities to improve mobility,” Brennon Fuqua, NCDOT Integrated Mobility Division director, said. “NCDOT is committed to ensuring that local public transit options meet the needs of residents, especially in rural areas.”
