The New York State Department of Transportation recently began a $11.6 million project to rehabilitate the bridge carrying State Route 42 and State Route 52 over the Neversink River in Fallsburg.
State Route 42 connects the communities of Port Jervis and Monticello with Fallsburg while State Route 52 runs through Sullivan County and links Narrowsburg and Liberty to Fallsburg. The project is located at one road in Woodbourne where both highways join.
The project will extend the service life of the two-span, 202-foot bridge by at least 50 years. Work includes replacing the bridge deck and superstructure. In addition, 300 feet of n asphalt will be laid down on either side of the bridge and sidewalks will be upgraded.
“The Catskills feature some of New York’s most exciting recreational attractions and beautiful scenery and we are committed to making sure the journey to reach them is as pleasant and hassle free as possible,” Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said. “The rehabilitation of this bridge in the Town of Fallsburg will modernize a vital connector used by residents and visitors alike and will help keep hikers, anglers, skiers and others coming to the region for decades to come.”
Construction is expected to be complete by 2027.
