The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is seeking redevelopment proposals for the Stewart B. McKinney Stamford Transportation Center (STC) project.

The project will upgrade and reconfigure the 11-acre STC site to meet growing demands and future transit expansions. The center currently serves more than 5.5 million annual rail and bus passengers, and Metro-North and Amtrak are anticipated to increase service.

Upgrades will include Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant designs, pedestrian-friendly designs, smart parking and energy-efficient systems, and replacing, relocating, and repurposing facilities within the station area to optimize long-term growth.

CTDOT invites interested development teams to submit proposals that blend transit improvements with mixed-use development of a minimum of 440,000-gross-square-feet. The agency’s preferred transit-oriented developments include primarily multi-family residential buildings with retail or a diverse mix..

“Redeveloping the Stewart B. McKinney Stamford Transportation Center is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a vibrant transit hub that meets Stamford’s growth and the evolving needs of travelers,” Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said. “By reimagining this property, we can deliver new housing, enhanced transit amenities, and commercial and retail spaces that will serve residents and visitors for decades to come.”

The proposal deadline is Dec. 5. CTDOT plans to select up to two development teams and execute predevelopment agreements by Feb. 27.
