A bipartisan group recently called for infrastructure reform and robust government funding at an event kicking off the fifth annual Infrastructure Week.
The event, held at Philadelphia International Airport, was hosted by members of the Philadelphia Congressional delegation, Building America’s Future and the Airports Council International – North America.
During a press conference, speakers called for infrastructure spending that could be used for updating airports and creating efficient hubs. The speakers toured the airport following the press conference, and were shown ongoing and future projects.
“America’s airports are a fundamental component of our nation’s transportation infrastructure,” Kevin M. Burke, president and CEO of Airports Council International – North America, said. “At the same time, U.S. airports have significant infrastructure needs – nearly $100 billion in needs over the next five years – that must be met if we are to maintain our leadership position in the global aviation system. We urge Congress and President Trump to work together to develop a comprehensive infrastructure plan that provides airports with greater local control to make their own investment decisions.”
Airports contribute $1.1 trillion annually to the economy and employ 1.2 million.
The average airport is 40 years old. Approximately $100 billion will be need over the next five years to modernize these facilities.
Airports nationwide are working to close the funding infrastructure gap of $10 billion a year needed for improvements.
“Our roads are riddled with potholes, our bridges are structurally deficient and our airports lack the sufficient capacity to move passengers and cargo efficiently. That’s why there is no better time to build than now,” Ed Rendell, co-chair of Building America’s Future and former Pennsylvania Governor, said. “The $1 trillion plan that President Trump has talked about is a good start, but our needs are much greater. We need a strategic and long-term plan that addresses the challenges of the 21st century, offers economic benefits, increases public safety and creates well-paying jobs.”
