The entire Metrorail system is now operating in Automatic Train Operation (ATO).

“This is a major milestone for Metro, and it has been a long time coming,” Randy Clarke, Metro General Manager and CEO, said. “I want to thank the team for their dedication and commitment to making this happen. This is a win for customers and staff who will experience safer, more reliable rides. Meanwhile, Metro is saving money as ATO is more cost efficient.”

ATO controls a train’s acceleration, deceleration and speed. Equipment located between the tracks sends trains a signal and speed commands. ATO helps enhance safety, improve on-time performance and ensure a smoother ride. It is not used during single tracking, inclement weather or when workers are on the tracks. Train operators still will work in the cab and will be responsible for passengers’ safety.

Six months ago Metro began operating in ATO on the Red Line. The Yellow and Green Lines began using ATO in May, and on June 15, the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines began operating in ATO.

Metro will continuously monitor ATO’s performance.

Metro is the major public transit provider of the National Capital Region serving Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
