The board of directors for Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), one of the largest transit systems in the United States, recently appointed Scott Sauer as general manager.
Sauer has been working for SEPTA since 1990 when he joined the agency as a surface train operator. He has held multiple roles including subway/elevated train operator, transportation manager, safety officer, assistant general manager of system safety, assistant general manager of operations, and chief operating officer. Most recently, he served as interim general manager, a role he assumed in November.
As general manager, Sauer will oversee SEPTA’s 9,300 employees and all aspects of the authority’s operations.
“I am honored to be entrusted with the stewardship of a transit system that is absolutely essential to the region’s success,” Sauer said. “I will continue to commit this organization to a back-to-basics philosophy emphasizing the fundamentals that keep Greater Philadelphia moving each day: safety, customer service and reliability.”
The board will consider a proposed budget on June 26. To correct a $213 million structural budget deficit, the budget includes a 45 percent service cut, a 9 p.m. curfew for all rail services, work force reductions and major fare increases.
Sauer also serves on multiple industry boards and committees.
