The Maryland Transit Administration plans to hold two open houses in June to discuss the Southern Maryland Rapid Transit Planning and Environment Linkages Study with the public and solicit feedback.
The study assesses how a new transit service could enhance access and economic development in southern Maryland. It considers multiple rapid transit modes including bus rapid transit, light rail transit, transit-only right-of-way and mixed-traffic operations.
The proposed Southern Maryland Rapid Transit project would help relieve congestion along the MD 5 (Branch Avenue)/US 301 (Crain Highway) corridor in Charles and Prince George’s counties.
“Expanding transit options across Maryland and moving people more efficiently and safely is one of my top priorities,” Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld said. “A rapid transit option in the ever-growing Southern Maryland region aligns closely with these goals.”
The first meeting will be held June 5 at the Greater Waldorf Jaycees Community Center in Waldorf, and the second meeting will be held June 10 at Francis T. Evans Elementary School in Clinton. In addition, a virtual meeting also will be held on June 11.
Attendees will learn about key project considerations, potential mode and route alignment options, and technical updates.
The public comment period closes on July 11.
