The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently awarded Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport in Rock Springs, Wyo., $8.25 million in Airport Terminal Program grants.
The airport will use funding to continue a terminal rehabilitation project that will modernize the 46-year-old structure and add an additional 15,508 square feet. Funding also will be used for upgrading the heating and cooling system and adding a new gate. Upgrades will increase peak hour capacity by nearly three times.
The Airport Terminal Program has awarded nearly $4 billion over the past four years to airports for upgrading and modernizing terminal infrastructure. The grants are intended to fund airport-owned airport traffic control towers, on-airport rail and bus projects that improve multimodal connections, and safe, sustainable and accessible airport terminals.
The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funds baggage system upgrades, noise compatibility projects, runway safety enhancements, terminal expansions, and airport planning, development and sustainability.
Grants are awarded based on airport size. At least 10 percent of the total funding will go to non-hub and non-primary airports, large hub airports will receive up to 55 percent, medium hub airports will receive up to 15 percent, and small hub airports will receive up to 20 percent.
Eligible applicants are airport sponsors normally eligible for Airport Improvement Program discretionary grants.
