The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) recently awarded 11 rural roadway projects $8.1 million in federal funds through the High Risk Rural Roads (HRRR) Program.

“With over 20 percent of fatal and serious injury crashes occurring on county roads, strong partnerships will be necessary to achieve the goal of zero roadway fatalities,” Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed said. “KDOT’s collaboration with local governments through programs like HRRR benefits our communities and strengthens connections across the state.”

The 11 projects fall into one of two categories, site specific or encompassing a local roadway network. They also will receive $1.6 million in local funds.

Awardees include:

Montgomery County received $1.7 million to add shoulders and widen culverts on Peter Pan Road from Cr 4600 to Cr 4800.

Ellsworth County received $1.3 million to add aggregate shoulders on Avenue L from K-156 to the west city limits of Kanopoli.

Pratt County received $1.1 million to add shoulders to NE 70th Avenue.

Meade County received $800,000 to add shoulders at 26 Road, Cemetery Road, Old 54, 10th Avenue, and 27th Road.

The HRRR program is federally funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program and was designed to improve the safety and efficiency of rural roads. KDOT received 29 applications seeking $29.9 million in funds.
