New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the New York State Department of Transportation will start work on replacing a bridge over I-90 in Herkimer, NY.
The $20.5 million project will replace the bridge over Mohawk Street with a new bridge that features under bridge lighting, a pedestrian sidewalk and improved riding surfaces. The current bridge is part of the Thruway system and is located just west of exit 30 on I-90.
“We’re investing in aging infrastructure in Herkimer County and beyond, making it safer, more resilient and more reliable,” Hochul said. “This project will ensure a seamless travel experience for the more than 24,000 daily drivers and stand as a reliable part of our transportation network for years to come.”
The new bridge will change the bridge from two spans into one and will include removing a pier from Mohawk Streets allowing for the creation of a full turning lane. When the project is complete, officials said, Mohawk Street will have a new lane pattern with reflective line striping, and a vertical clearance of 14 feet 6 inches.
During construction, all eastbound and westbound traffic on I-90 will shift to the westbound side of the bridge so work can be done on the eastbound side as part of Stage 1 of the project. Traffic will shift back to its original configuration in fall. Then, when Stage 2 begins in 2026, traffic will be shifted to the eastbound side of the bridge to allow for work on the westbound side.
“The Thruway Authority is continuing our investment in replacing and rehabilitating bridges on the system that are more than 60 years old,” New York State Thruway Authority Executive Director Frank G. Hoare said. “We’re putting toll dollars to work to improve the dependability of the Thruway system and enhance safety for all drivers.”
