Work underway on the Hudson Tunnel Project will support 20,200 direct, indirect, and induced full-time equivalent workers and will generate $4.5 billion in economic output and $1.7 billion in labor income, according to an economic impact analysis of the first five contracts in active construction.
Every $10 spent on direct labor supports $17 in wages and benefits nationwide. In addition, 94 percent of the $2.2 billion in capital spending is expected to remain in the United States.
“When the Hudson Tunnel Project is complete it will deliver 21st century transportation reliability for millions of passengers,” Tom Prendergast, Gateway Development Commission, CEO said. “Today it is delivering good jobs for workers and new business for American companies. Every time we launch work on a new construction site for this megaproject, we have a major positive impact on the economy. It’s essential that we keep up the forward momentum and remain vigilant about its scope, schedule, and budget.”
The Gateway Program is a set of rail investments that will improve commuter and intercity services, create new capacity and add resiliency to the busiest section of the Northeast Corridor, the most heavily used passenger rail line in the United States. Daily, more than 2,200 train movements are conducted on the line.
