The U.S. Department of Transportation announced it had awarded more than $1.3 billion in grants for 109 projects across the country on Jan. 10.

The grants part of the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) discretionary grant program will be used on projects that rebuild and repair critical infrastructure in areas of local or regional significance. Part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the funding is part of nearly $5 billion in awards to modernize the country’s infrastructure.

“Thanks to President Biden and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, crucial projects that communities across the country have long hoped for are finally becoming a reality,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. “With the $1.32 billion in funding we’re announcing today, we’re setting in motion over 100 projects that will make roads safer, help mitigate the impact of climate change, and ensure that people in communities of all sizes can get where they need to go safely and efficiently.”

The awards include $19 million for the city of Flagstaff, Ariz., for the Butler Avenue and Fourth Street Safety and Multimodal Improvements to construct multimodal improvements along Butler Avenue ; $25 million for Olean, N.Y., for the Connecting Communities: A Multi-Modal Vision for West State Street Project that will provide a complete street makeover of a 2.5-mile road; and $9.5 million for the Port of Benton in Richland, Wash., for the White Bluffs Southern Connection Rail Line Rehabilitation to repair and replace the White Bluffs Southern Connection Rail Line.

Officials said 195 projects applied for nearly $2.4 billion for the $1.32 billion available as part of the first round of FY 2025 funding. The notice of funding opportunity is still open for the remaining funds and application for those grants are due by Jan. 30, 2025.
