APTA presents bus safety, security awards

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) recently presented its 2017 Bus Safety & Security Excellence Awards at the annual APTA Bus & Paratransit Conference.

The GOLD Award is given to the transit system with the best overall bus safety or bus security program. Certificates of Merit recognize exceptional achievements in safety or security.

“Congratulations to these public transportation systems for implementing successful, innovative safety and security programs that serve as a model to the rest of the industry,” APTA Chairman and Executive Director Doran Barnes said.

In the category “bus systems with 20 million or more passenger trips annually,” the GOLD Award for Safety was given to the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System for reducing accidents to one per 100,000 miles driven in 2016.

The Certificate of Merit for Safety was given to, both, the Maryland Transit Administration and to the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, while the Certificate of Merit for Security and Emergency Response was given to the Chicago Transit Authority.

In the category, “bus systems with more than 4 million yet fewer than 20 million passenger trips annually,” the GOLD Award for Safety was given to the Greater Bridgeport Transit while the GOLD Award for Security was awarded to the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority.

Kansas City also received a Certificate of Merit for Safety.

Southwest Ohio Transit Authority and the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority were presented with Certificated of Merit for Security.

In the category “bus systems with fewer than 4 million passenger trips annually,” the GOLD Award for Safety went to the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority.
