The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recently awarded San Antonio, Texas, a $267.8 million Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program grant for the construction of the VIA Advanced Rapid Transit North/South Corridor.

The corridor, also known as the Green Line, will support a 10-mile bus rapid transit line.

The $481 million project will alleviate congestion along one of the city’s most heavily traveled corridors, align with the region’s growth and land use vision, and improve air quality.

“The Green Line is more than just a transportation project; it’s a commitment to making travel throughout the San Antonio region more convenient and affordable and ensuring that more people have access to jobs and schools, grocery stores and doctors’ offices.” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. “With the funding we’re announcing today, the Biden-Harris administration is making a vital investment in San Antonio’s transit future that will strengthen the community for generations to come.”

The project includes nearly eight miles of dedicated bus lanes for low-emission-compressed-natural-gas powered vehicles, train station-like stops with level boarding, traffic signal priority, improved lighting, and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks.

Population within the corridor is project to grow 42 percent by 2040, and jobs are forecasted to spike by 45 percent.
