Metrolink in California awarded Alstom operations, maintenance contract

Alstom announced on Dec. 9 that is has been awarded a contract to provide maintenance for Southern California Regional Rail Authority (Metrolink), as well as provide operations of its in Southern California rolling stock fleet.

The $515 million contract will run from Jan. 1, 2025, to June 30, 2030. Metrolink said it anticipates retaining 180 employees and hiring another 200 to support its operations efforts. The contract allows for a potential three-year extension, which would increase the contract’s base value to an estimated $860 million.

Alstom delivered its first Bilevel coaches to Metrolink more than 30 years ago and has been serving as the transit agency’s maintenance provider since 1998.

“We are grateful for the trust the Southern California Regional Rail Authority and their Board of Directors has placed in Alstom as we expand our role to support their operations and maintenance needs,” Michael Keroullé, president of Alstom Americas, said. “Metrolink customers are doing their part to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, and we are committed to bringing them our experience and dedication to deliver world class service and to help Metrolink prepare to accommodate visitors from around the world during the upcoming global sporting events in Southern California.”

The contract covers maintenance services for Metrolink, and full operations services across the Metrolink system of more than 545 service line miles. The Alstom team will have more than 200 employees in place to handle the operations by July 1, 2025, the company said. The contract covers train crewing and customer service, maintenance of the rolling stock fleet, and facilities maintenance with an option for materials management.
