A new hydrogen station will support growing hydrogen bus fleets in Riverside, Calif., officials said.
Riverside Transit Agency has awarded Clean Energy, the country’s largest provider of hydrogen fuel, with a contract to design and construct the new state-of-the-art hydrogen fueling station. The contract was won following a competitive solicitation, officials said, and will include the supply of hydrogen and the maintenance services for the Riverside, CA station.
“Being awarded another hydrogen station is a testament to Clean Energy’s leadership and expertise in the hydrogen fueling space. Partnering with the forward-thinking team at Riverside Transit is a great feather in our hat as they transition, expand and diversify to other clean, low emissions technologies,” Chad Lindholm, senior vice president of Clean Energy, said. “Hydrogen offers a reliable solution for long routes and this new station will support RTA’s goals to serve their community cleanly for years to come.”
RTA plans to operate five fuel cell buses when the stations opens, officials said, and over the next decade plans to grow the hydrogen fleet to more than 100 buses. This new facility will play a central role in the agency’s commitment to transitioning to a zero-emission vehicle fleet.
“This project reflects our commitment to fostering healthier communities by advancing clean energy solutions and is a critical milestone as we move to a zero-emission vehicle fleet,” Jeremy Smith, board chair at Riverside Transit Agency, said. “We are driving innovation while addressing the need for environmentally responsible solutions.”
RTA recently announced it will purchase five 40-foot hydrogen fuel cell electric buses with $5.1 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The agency plans to transition to zero-emission vehicles starting in 2026.
