The Rhode Island Department of Transportation recently narrowed the list of qualified design-build teams for the westbound Washington Bridge replacement project to two.

The two design-build teams move to the request for proposal (RFP) phase and will compete for the contract to build the new bridge. The RFP phase is expected to begin Wednesday. The two teams will review and provide comments on the initial RFP then develop proposals in response to the final RFP that will be released on Jan. 24.

“Since March 14 when it was determined the Washington Bridge must be rebuilt, we’ve continued to make progress toward ensuring Rhode Islanders have a bridge that will outlast our lifetimes,” Gov. Dan McKee said. “With the selection of two highly qualified construction teams to compete for the rebuild project, I am pleased to see progress continue.”

The two teams are Walsh Construction Company II, a Chicago-based bridge builder, and a joint venture of American Bridge Co., a Pennsylvania-based bridge builder, and MLJ Contracting Corp., a New York-based company.

Final technical proposals and cost proposals will be due in May. Rhode Island will award a contact on June 6 with a final notice to proceed issued on July 15.
