The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) recently awarded 21 projects in 10 counties $11.7 million in fiscal year 2025 Safe Streets to Transit (SSTT) Program grants.

The program funds projects and activities that improve pedestrian conditions within a 1-mile radius of a transit facility or station. The goal is to improve the safety and accessibility for mass transit riders walking to transit facilities. It is funded through the State Transportation Trust Fund.

“Nothing is more important to me than the safety of our transportation system for all users, particularly those who are most vulnerable – pedestrians and the mobility impaired,” NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor said. “I appreciate Gov. (Phil) Murphy and the legislature’s commitment to the Safe Routes to Transit Program by making additional funds available so more communities can improve sidewalks and provide safe and convenient crosswalks near bus and rail stations.”

Annually, the program awards $1 million. Grants-in-Aid provided $9.3 million in additional funding this year, and $1.4 million appropriated for Pedestrian Safety Grants was applied to the program, bringing the fiscal year 2025 total to $11.7 million.

Eligibility criteria includes project need, proximity to a transit facility, accessibility, safety,
and benefiting low-income and minority populations. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis.
